A Little Reminder

This is a small miracle in some ways, but all the more dear because it was such a thoughtful favor.

A couple of weeks ago my sister and I planned a dinner event for a few couples. She is going to be coming into town last minute and she’ll use my ingredients to make dinner when she arrives. When we discused what she’d need, she mistakenly assumed I’d have certain items in my pantry, ie couscous and capers. I made a mental note to get them

Today, two weeks later, our dinner is approaching. I was at the grocery store. I remembered I had an assignment, but could not remember the list which I hadn’t written down.

I was getting a few things with my husband who never shops with me. Ironically the previous evening my brother in law had told me that parmesan cheese was cheap at Winco’s bulk section. We decided to check out his advice and went looking for the cheese.

A girl was standing directly in front of the cheese bin, filing a bag from an overhead bin, so we had to wait on her to fill her bag and fill out her tag. It was kind of close quarters, and so I chatted with her for a minute. She was buying couscous. Suddenly I realized that was one of my list ingredients. It was kind of like hitting a jackpot. Sweet!

Thereafter my husband and I went to find sugarless canned peaches. I usually buy the little individual cups that are stocked in the entryway of the store because they are a quick and convenient sweettooth treat. But he was not happy with that idea, assuming they were more expensive than regular cans. So we went into the center rows i usually skip, looking to find them. Finally we found one end of a row full of canned fruit; the other end was all things pickled and vinegars. While he was comparing prices and sugar content, I looked at those pickle jars and remembered that I needed capers too!

Yes, it was small but it just felt so personal. I stopped and thanked God with a gleeful heart because it had been a long time since I’d discussed that list, and it was so unlikely that I would just happen upon both items without remembering what I was looking for (having barely walked through a quarter of the store). It was just such a bonus kindness, like a touch of favoritism and a wink. I loved it.
