The Tale of the Curly Hair
This story is such a funny story. In 2021, I wanted curly hair again. I’d had curly hair growing up, not because I had naturally curly hair but because in the 80’s, perms were a popular thing and my mom knew how to give them.
I asked my hairdresser if he could give me a perm. I’d let my hair grow out just long enough to give it a shot. He agreed, confirmed to me how great it would look and gave me a perm.
Friends. I hated it. It was more frizzy than curly, it poked out in all the wrong places, and wasn’t at all what I imagined. I could not wait for it to grow out long enough to cut it all off, it was that bad.
A little over a year ago, I was talking to God about it. I had just hit my birthday and needed a change. I would love to have curly hair, but there was no way I was going to try another perm. It was too much of a risk. How hard would it be if He just blessed me a little?
Then, after this conversation, I mentioned to my daughter about wanting to have curly hair. She brought over some product to maybe “work” with my tiny waves in my hair that I, quite frankly never noticed I even had.
We added the product, scrunched, more product, sprayed with water and diffused my hair. You would not believe it. There were some curls in there! I had to laugh!
These curls weren’t perfect, nor was I great at this new technique, but little by little, I got better at working this new curly hair routine out.
Now I know you might think I’m reaching. I’ve learned to see God in all the blessings in my life. He really does answer our prayers, but not necessarily in the way we think. I certainly wasn’t expecting Him to give me curly hair and yet He provided a simple way for me that otherwise I would have missed.
Praise God!
